Past Lives and the Memory of the Body – A Marma Perspective

Published: Thu Mar 05 2026

In traditional knowledge systems of the body, human life is not seen as beginning and ending with a single birth. The body carries subtle memories that extend beyond the visible lifetime. These impressions are known as vasanas - subtle energetic imprints that remain within the deeper layers of the body.

Marma knowledge understands the human body not only as a physical structure but also as a network of vital energy points through which life force (prana) flows. Within this network, experiences from the past - including those from previous births - can leave impressions that influence the present life.

Our tendencies, fears, talents, and even certain recurring life patterns may arise from these deeper energetic memories.

An ancient verse describes this principle:
“Purvajanma kritam papam vyadhi rupena badhate
Purvajanma kritam punyam vidya rupena bhasate
Vasana rupatah sarvam chakreshu parivartate
Jnana dipena karma bandham vishodhayet.”

This teaching explains that actions performed in previous lives may manifest in the present life in different ways. Certain difficulties, illnesses, or obstacles may arise from unresolved impressions, while virtuous actions from the past may appear as knowledge, clarity, devotion, or natural abilities.
These impressions remain stored as subtle patterns within the body’s energetic centers.

The Body as a Living Archive

Marma knowledge views the human body as a living archive of experience. Every strong emotion, trauma, or transformation leaves an energetic trace within the body.
The marma points are the gateways through which prana moves and organizes the body’s functions. When energy flows freely through these points, the body and mind remain balanced. When impressions accumulate or become disturbed, they can influence both physical health and psychological tendencies.

Sometimes people experience:
Unexplained fears
Deep attractions toward certain places or traditions
Natural talents without formal training
Repeating life patterns

These experiences can be understood as echoes stored within the body’s deeper energetic layers.

The Three Movements of Karma

Traditional teachings describe karma through three movements:
Sanchita Karma
The accumulated impressions gathered across many lifetimes.
Prarabdha Karma
The portion of karma that has begun to unfold in the present life.
Agami Karma
The karma created through present actions that will shape the future.
While certain aspects of life arise from past causes, the present moment always contains the possibility of transformation and balance.

The Relationship Between the Body and the Earth

The human body is closely connected with the natural environment. Just as the body contains marma points, the Earth also contains subtle energetic regions.
The place where a person is born can influence how certain energies develop within the body.
For example:
People born near water bodies often develop strong emotional and creative qualities connected to the lower energy centers.
Those born in mountainous or elevated regions may naturally develop stronger perception and inner awareness.
The body and the Earth continuously interact through subtle energetic exchanges.

The Power of Sound and Name

In traditional understanding, sound has a direct influence on the movement of life force within the body.
A name is therefore not only an identity but also a vibrational influence that interacts with the individual’s energetic structure. The first syllable of a name can subtly affect the movement of prana and the expression of personality.

Profession as the Expression of Inner Energy

The profession a person chooses often reflects how their inner energy moves outward into the world. Some individuals express strong willpower and leadership, guiding them toward positions of responsibility. Others carry a strong intellectual or perceptive quality, leading them toward teaching, research, or spiritual study. Some possess powerful action-oriented energy, excelling in practical, technical, or creative fields.
When these inner energies align with one's life path, a sense of natural flow begins to appear in life.

Recognizing the Echo of the Past

There are moments in life when a person feels a deep and unexpected connection with a place. Walking on a certain land, touching the soil, or entering a particular environment may awaken a subtle inner vibration.
This resonance is often felt strongly within the Muladhara chakra, the energy center associated with the Earth element and the foundations of life.
Such experiences remind us that the human journey is part of a much larger continuity of existence.
Understanding the body’s subtle energy patterns can gradually guide a person toward greater clarity, balance, and transformation in the present life.
